Finally! It’s summer here in the Philippines, and I can’t wait to visit some of the most beautiful beaches. I was planning this trip to Sumilon Island together with a friend for almost a year now, and this time, we made sure we did and again, I’m back to South of Cebu for a beach get-away.
Sumilon Island is known for its sandbar but what surprised me is that there are actually a lot of activities that can be enjoyed if you pay for a day tour at Sumilon Island BlueWater Resort. It is the only resort on this island and the one who manages all the activities and the accommodation.
GETTING TO SUMILON ISLAND:
The island is located a few minutes away from Bancogon, Oslob, a municipality in Cebu well known for its whale sharks.
So how do we get to Bancogon Oslob?
From Cebu City: Go to South Bus Terminal and choose the Ceres Bus Line that heads to Liloan. Just inform the ticketing officer to drop you off at the crossing of Sumilon Island Bluewater Resort. It takes approximately 3 – 4 hours to arrive.
From Dumaguete City: It is easier for you to go to Sibulan Port, ride a fast craft, ride a Ceres Bus Line and it will just take about 15 minutes to get to the crossing of Sumilon Island Bluewater Resort.
Note: If you’re coming from Manila, it is much quicker for you to book the Manila-Dumaguete flight because this island is nearer to Dumaguete than the city of Cebu. Their signage (COLOR BLUE) can be seen on the highway and usually employed men from the resort wait for tourists and local visitors at the entrance.
WHERE TO STAY IN
Cebu – You can choose any of these hotels here for your accommodation and get a big discount!
Dumaguete – You can choose any of these hotels here in Dumaguete for your accommodation and get a big discount!
HOW MUCH IS THE DAY TOUR?
The day trip costs P1500.00 during the weekday and P2000 during weekends. Contact the resort to book ahead for your day trip. We went there Friday, so it’s much cheaper.
RECEIVING AND WAITING AREA FOR GUESTS:
Once you have paid and confirmed your booking with the resort, you will then be welcomed to their waiting area.
The staff is very accommodating and very friendly! They offered us a glass of iced tea too! Might as well take a photo of them, giving their best SMILES! 🙂
We arrived at the Lounge at 10:15 am so we had to wait until 11:00 am for the boat to take us to Sumilon Island. (Refer to boat schedule above)
Before heading to Sumilon Island, the receptionist will give you an orientation of the island and the activities you can do there. That’s all included in your P1500.00.
There were about 50 people on the boat. Amazing that it fitted 50 individuals in a small boat. The weather was cloudy, but the waves were controllable, so it was totally safe. A lot wouldn’t want to risk going there because of the rumor that safety was not assured but that’s not true. All of the passengers have lifevests, and it was compulsory to wear one.
The buffet was ready when we arrived, and to my surprise, the food was superb! Had a mix of Western and Filipino food. My favorite was their fish fillet with mango dressing. Total yum!
So this part is my favorite. We did kayaking and a little bit of trekking to explore the island. We also made use of their swimming pool and went to the sandbar but at that time, it was high tide, so we didn’t get the chance actually to see the popular spot. Yeah, sad but we still got the most of our time there.
A lot of tourists were there. It’s like only about 10% Filipino guests, and 90% were Chinese, Koreans, Americans, Latins, and others.
My first time to do this and it was relatively easy to kayak. Lol! So we had to synchronize our paddles for us to have the same direction. Funny enough, we landed over that bushes there, and we were stuck for about 5 minutes. HAHA! We paddled away and away so then we saved ourselves!
Aside from these activities, they also offer body massage and other spa activities.Their restaurant also serves beer and delicious cuisines but you have to pay extra for it.
What I love about Sumilon Island and the resort is that they offer different kinds of activities that you won’t look for more places to go or hop on to another island to experience. To summarize it all, here are the activities guest can enjoy.
- Fish Feeding (if you’ve never tried, you should definitely do it)
- Use of swimming pool and swimming in the sandbar
OTHER THINGS YOU CAN DO:
- Sunbathing (they have lovely spots for this)
- Enjoying the beautiful place 🙂
- Photoshoots (if you’re up to this)
We wanted to try the Jacuzzi, but it was always surrounded by a lot of people.
We went back to Mainland Bancogon at 3:30 PM to catch the Ceres Bus Line back to Liloan and the fast craft back to Negros. While waiting for minutes, we got lucky that one of the employees gave us a ride going to Liloan Port. We agreed to pay the same amount the Bus Line asks from us, but when we arrived at Liloan Port, he refused to receive the fare that eventually gave us a free ride!
Generosity from people everywhere.
This was pretty intense because the weather got worse, so the current and the wind was a little bit strong making the boat shaky, It was scary, but we know we were safe because of the life jackets and the control and assurance of the men handling the boat. Nonetheless, it was by far a great experience to explore the island and come closer to nature.
Fast craft fare from Sibulan Port to Liloan and back – Php124.00
Ceres Bus line from Liloan to Mainland Bancogon and back (but we just paid Php30.00 as we had a free ride back to Liloan) – Php60.00
Day tour package – Php1500.00
Other fares – Php50.00
Snacks – Php100.00
Definitely worth the money spent. 🙂
I wish I inspired you to call your friends and family to book a trip here to Sumilon Island with Bluewater Sumilon Island Resort and I swear you won’t regret your time. Just make sure the weather is good, and the sun is out so you can appreciate the Sandbar. 🙂
